In the 90s, CD stores had a sort of tabletop that let you look at the CDs stacked one behind the other. That took up a lot of surface area. This CD store is designed differently. Many classical CDs had to be displayed in a relatively small area. Thus this design was created, allowing you to view the CDs as books in a book case.
